Idea
Due to the task of creating a 360° stereoscopic VR video and recent acquisition of more low poly game assets from Humble Bundle, I’ve decided to design a lobby world for social VR experiences. There the players could teleport or walk to different themed regions all offering several common and some custom interactive game variants.
The players can choose from sports based activities to watching videos together while enjoying a handcrafted environment.
Course
The LMU VR courses are usually split in one introductory and one group project course. Due to Covid, the goal was changed from working with the CAVE of the LRZ to using standard or VR capable outputs.
After some weeks of theory and a small Unreal Engine introduction, the students were working on their video consisting of at least two scenes.
Result
Lots of foliage was added in order not to create a feeling of being in an empty world, which required setting up LOD groups and somewhat optimizing them. Even though the diy material with wind effect was not working in the 360° video renderer. But I am happy with the resulting vr hub world based on the idea above.
Original 360° Images
The 360° video file does not work with the used viewer plugin. High resolution images are used instead. Maybe they require a page refresh or cookies. Otherwise if they still don’t load, please message me, then I will need to find another solution.
Update 2025
Since the output video requires a compatible viewer, I revisited the project early 2025 for this website and changed some animations. Additionally, a camera sequence was added, travelling around the virtual world instead of two static positions.
The world was designed with only the two fixed positions in mind, this results in undetailed spots in the new video.
